Eat Slowly
“This book of the Law shall
not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that
you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will
make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success”. Joshua 1:8.
Although we
live in modern world where fast food is ordered quickly, consumed rapidly and
forgotten immediately, the study of the Bible does not lend itself to such a
hurried approach. The Word of God must be eaten slowly to nourish the soul
properly. Here are some very practical tips that many people have found to be helpful
in their daily study of the Bible or other devotional material:
Mark the Text- One of the best pieces of advice is
studying the Scriptures is to mark the text. You can use a pen, pencil, or a
highlighter t underline or make notes about your observations. The marking of
the text not only slows down your reading but the ink is also like a second
pair of eyes- helping you observe the wonderful structure and relationships
that are build in the Scriptures.
Meditate on the Text- The Lord instructed Joshua, as cited
in our verse for today, to “ not let this Book of the Law depart from your
mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that may be careful to do everything
written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
The meaning
of the Hebrew word for “meditate” in
this verse conveys the idea of speaking to one’s self, which is certainly in
harmony with the instruction to not let the word “ depart from your mouth.”
Anything
that we can do to carry about the Word of God in our heart, our minds, our
eyes, our mouth will be greatly instrumental to the prosperity of our spiritual
life. To do this, we must take our time when reading the text of the
scriptures. Only then can our devotional lives deeply nourish our hungry
hearts.
